Average Weight of NFL Quarterbacks in 2024

In the NFL, quarterbacks are often seen as the maestros of the gridiron, orchestrating plays with precision and agility. But beyond their strategic prowess and lightning-quick decision-making, there’s another aspect that’s crucial yet often overlooked: their physicality, particularly their weight.

What is the average weight of an NFL quarterback today, and how does it impact their performance on the field?

For this deep dive, I examined the heights and weights of over 70 quarterbacks on opening-day rosters for the 2023 season. Whether you’re a fantasy league fanatic, a budding quarterback, or just a curious fan, join me as we delve into the numbers and surprising insights behind the weight of these gridiron giants.

NFL QB Avg Weight

The average weight of an NFL quarterback in 2023 is 219 pounds. However, with a position like quarterback, the overall average doesn’t always give a clear picture.

NFL Quarterbacks can vary drastically in body type, especially when you consider the differences between a “traditional” pocket passer who is often (but not always) taller and overall bigger than a dual-threat quarterback.

So, in an effort to give you an even better idea of where NFL Quarterbacks weigh in, we broke the position down into 10-pound increments and tallied up how many players fell into each section.

Quarterback Weight Scale

Weight RangeNumber of Players
190 – 1993
200 – 20910
210 – 21926
220 – 22928
230 – 2399
240 – 2491

By breaking the numbers down like this we can see that in addition to 219 being the average weight for a QB, 54 of the 75 (72%) quarterbacks fall in a relatively tight window from 210 to 229.

So, if you want to play quarterback in the NFL, there are a few guys proving you can do it at under 200 pounds. However, you’re chances seem to be much better right around 220 pounds.

Conclusion

As we conclude our deep dive into the 2023 NFL quarterback landscape, it’s clear that while the average weight of these field generals hovers around 219 pounds, the essence of their success isn’t solely defined by the numbers on the scale.

The diversity in quarterback physiques emphasizes a fundamental truth: in the NFL, different styles and builds bring unique strengths to the table. It’s not just about being the heaviest or the lightest; it’s about how well a quarterback’s build complements their playing style and the strategic needs of their team.

As fans and analysts, we often get caught up in statistics and measurements, but the true measure of a quarterback’s prowess is seen in their ability to lead their team to victory, irrespective of their physical attributes. Whether it’s a 200-pound speedster making a nimble dash or a 240-pound powerhouse throwing a bullet pass, each brings something special to the game.
