Fans tend to do the same thing. It’s always more fun to pull for a player when they’re from your home state (or even your hometown), especially when that player also happens to be playing on your favorite team.

With all that in mind, we went through MLB.com and pulled the home states (or countries) of every player on the 40-man rosters for each team.

We found 10 players from the state of Maryland on major league rosters which places it right in the middle (t-25th) of all states in the US – tied with South Carolina and Wisconsin. Out of the 10 players, Baltimore is the most well-represented city in the state with 4 of the 10 players born in Maryland’s largest city.

Bryan Reynolds

Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland

Bryan Reynolds, from Baltimore, Maryland, has quickly emerged as a key outfielder in Major League Baseball. Reynolds’ baseball journey began at Brentwood High School in Tennessee, followed by a successful collegiate career at Vanderbilt University.

Drafted in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants and later traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Reynolds has become known for his consistent hitting and on-base skills. In his breakout rookie season in 2019, he posted a high batting average and on-base percentage, earning him consideration for Rookie of the Year.

Josh Hader

Josh Hader, hailing from Millersville, Maryland, has established himself as one of the premier relief pitchers in Major League Baseball.

After attending Old Mill High School in Maryland, Hader was drafted in the 19th round of the 2012 MLB Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and later traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. Known for his high-velocity fastball and devastating slider, Hader has been a dominant force in the Brewers’ bullpen.

Shane McClanahan

California, by far, has the most current MLB players of any state with 189.

The second most was the state of Florida with 89, followed by Texas (78), New York (42) and Georgia (40).

The Dominican Republic has 120 players currently in major league baseball which is incredibly impressive considering the country has a total population of only 11 million people. By comparison, the state of California has a population of 39 million and the state of Florida has a population of almost 22 million.
