5 Baseball Players who Played for Rays and Braves

That also means that today’s grid has asked for players that have played for both the Tampa Bay Rays and Atlanta Braves.

Well, good news, you’re in the right place.

I’ve done some research and have found players who played for both the Rays and the Braves.

B.J. Upton

B.J. Upton, who played from 2004 to 2016, is best known for his time as an outfielder with the Tampa Bay Rays. Upton was a dynamic player, recording over 1200 hits, 164 home runs, and 300 stolen bases in his career.

Though never an All-Star, Upton had a key role in the Rays’ run to the 2008 World Series with his impressive postseason performance. His best season arguably came in 2007 when he hit .300 with 24 home runs and 22 stolen bases.

Fred McGriff

Fred McGriff was a powerhouse over his 19 year career in majors. Over that time he played for 6 different teams including the Rays, Braves, Blue Jays, Padres, Cubs and Dodgers.

Earning the nickname “Crime Dog” from Chris Berman, McGriff smashed over 490 home runs (career high of 36 in 1989 with the Blue Jays) and 1500 RBIs.

He was a key player in the Braves’ 1995 World Series win and made the All-Star team five times. McGriff was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023.

Jonny Gomes

Jonny Gomes, who played from 2003 to 2015, is best known for his time as an outfielder with the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.

In his 13-year career, Gomes accumulated over 800 hits, hit 162 home runs, and maintained a .242 career batting average. A key figure in the clubhouse, he was part of the 2013 World Series-winning Red Sox team and is remembered for his pivotal home run in Game 4 of the series.

His best season came in 2005 with the Rays when he hit .282 with 21 home runs and 54 RBIs.

Charlie Morton

Charlie Morton is in his 16th year in the majors and is currently pitching for the Atlanta Braves. He has played for 5 different teams over his long career thus far including the Pirates, Rays, Astros and Phillies.

Morton has been a solid player throughout his career, racking up 125 wins, over 1800 strikeouts and a 4.00 ERA (as of this writing). He’s also made two All-Star appearances (Astros, Rays) and two World Series rings – Astros in 2017 and Braves in 2021.

Fun Fact: Morton has the interesting distinction of having led the league four different times in ‘Hits by Pitch’.

Matt Joyce

Matt Joyce carved out a notable career as a power-hitting outfielder and designated hitter in the majors from 2008 to 2021. He saw action with several teams, most notably the Tampa Bay Rays.

Joyce posted a career batting average of .242, hit 149 home runs, and drove in 503 runs over his career. He earned an All-Star selection with the Rays in 2011 when he had his most productive offensive season, hitting .277 with 19 home runs and 75 RBIs.
