6 Baseball Players who Played for Yankees and Reds

There is a good chance that if you’ve found this page then you’re playing the Immaculate Grid.

That also means that today’s grid has asked for players that have played for both the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds.

And, it also means that you’re probably stuck on this particular box and you’re looking for a little help. Sound about right so far?

Well, good news, you’re in the right place.

I’ve done some research and have found players who played for both the Yankees and the Reds.

Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman, nicknamed “The Cuban Missile,” is a pitcher known for his blazing fastball, which has been clocked as high as 105 miles per hour. Chapman made his debut with Cincinnati and was an integral part of the Reds’ bullpen, earning multiple All-Star selections during his tenure with the team.

In late 2015, he was traded to the New York Yankees, but his time in New York was initially short-lived. In mid-2016, Chapman was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he played a key role in helping the Cubs win the World Series, their first in over 100 years.

After that season, Chapman went back to the Yankees where he continued to have major success, including three additional All-Star selections.

  • World Series Champ (Cubs)

David Wells

David Wells, nicknamed “Boomer”, was a major force on the baseball mound from 1987 to 2007, spending time with the Blue Jays, Yankees, Padres, and several other teams including Tigers, Red Sox, Dodgers, Reds, Orioles and White Sox.

A key player in the Yankees’ ’98 World Series win, Wells also pitched a rare perfect game that same year.

His career stats are impressive, with a total of 239 wins and over 2,200 strikeouts over the course of 21 seasons.

Hal Morris

Hal Morris was a steady first baseman in baseball from 1988 to 2000, best known for his time with the Reds. Morris was part of the Reds’ World Series-winning team in 1990 and was known for his consistent hitting, maintaining a solid .304 career batting average.

You probably remember him, like I do, in a Reds uniform where he played for 10 years, but he also had stops with the Yankees, Royals and Tigers.

Sonny Gray

Sonny Gray was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft as the 18th overall pick. Known for his competitive nature and a mix of effective pitches, Gray has been a very effective starting pitcher in the major leagues.

He made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 2013, and in 2015, he was named an All-Star for the first time, finishing that season with a 2.73 ERA and placing third in the AL Cy Young Award voting.

Gray’s career has also included stints with the New York Yankees, Cincinnati Reds and Minnesota Twins. His performance with the Reds during the 2019 season was particularly impressive, as he compiled a 2.87 ERA, 205 strikeouts and earned his second All-Star selection.

Didi Gregorius

Didi Gregorius had an 11-year career in the majors and was a shortstop known best for his time with the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.

Gregorius ended his career 1 hit shy of 1000 and hit 134 home runs with a .257 career batting average.

Notable for his solid defensive skills and power at the plate (for a shortstop), he had several strong seasons with the Yankees, including 2018, where he hit .268 with 27 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Aaron Boone

Aaron Boone played in the Major Leagues from 1997 to 2009, with stints at the Cincinnati Reds, Yankees, Indians, Marlins, Nationals, and Astros.

He is often remembered for his clutch home run in the 11th inning of Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, sending the Yankees to the World Series.

Over his career, Boone had a batting average of .263, hit 126 home runs and drove in 555 runs. His solid performance at third base earned him an All-Star selection in 2003 with the Reds.
