Average Weight of NFL Guards in 2023
In the NFL, where brute strength meets strategic finesse, the offensive guard’s role is pivotal, often tipping the scales of a game. As the 2023 season unfolds, it’s time to put the spotlight on these central figures of the offensive line – the guards.
Their weight, a critical factor in their ability to hold the line and protect the quarterback, is more than just a number; it’s a testament to their physical prowess and dedication to their craft.
For this deep dive, I examined the heights and weights of over 100 guards on opening-day rosters for the 2023 season. So, tighten your cleats, and let’s weigh in on the heavy hitters of the NFL!
NFL G Avg Weight
The average weight of an NFL offensive guard in 2023 is 316 pounds.
However, the overall average doesn’t always give a clear picture. Especially when you consider that Guards range in weight from the lightest guy at 285 all the way up to 370 pounds!
So, in an effort to give you an even better idea of where NFL Offensive Guards weigh in, we broke the position down into 10-pound increments and tallied up how many players fell into each section.
Guard Weight Scale
Weight Range | Number of Players |
---|---|
280 – 289 | 1 |
290 – 299 | 4 |
300 – 309 | 26 |
310 – 319 | 34 |
320 – 329 | 20 |
330 – 339 | 14 |
340 – 349 | 0 |
350 – 359 | 1 |
360 – 369 | 0 |
370 – 379 | 1 |
By breaking the numbers down like this we can see that in addition to 316 being the average weight for an OG, 80 out of 110 (79%) offensive guards fall in a relatively tight window from 300 to 329.
In fact, the manner in which the number skyrockets from only five guys under 300 to 26 who are just over 300 pounds makes me wonder how many guys have a minimum weight of 300 written into their contract.
