6 Baseball Players who Played for Mariners and Phillies

There is a good chance that if you’ve found this page then you’re playing the Immaculate Grid.

That also means that today’s grid has asked for players that have played for both the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies.

And, it also means that you’re probably stuck on this particular box and you’re looking for a little help. Sound about right so far?

Well, good news, you’re in the right place.

I’ve done some research and have found players who played for both the Mariners and the Phillies.

Popular Choices

Guys in this tier are likely to be popular picks because of the impact they made on both teams and/or how recently they’ve played in both uniforms.

J.P. Crawford

J.P. Crawford is in his 7th year in the majors, currently playing shortstop for the Seattle Mariners. Prior to Seattle, he spent 2 seasons with the Phillies.

Crawford has been a solid starter, especially in his last three seasons with the Mariners. In 2020, he earned a Gold Glove award (Mariners) for his outstanding play in the field.

Because of his current standing as an everyday starter for Seattle and his rather recent (’17 & ’18) time with the Phillies, Crawford will most likely be a popular choice for this square.

*Crawford was the most popular choice for this square in a previous grid (Grid 107).

Jamie Moyer

Jamie Moyer was a steady pitcher in baseball for an impressive stretch from 1986 to 2012. He made a name for himself with teams like the Mariners and Phillies, but also had stops with the Cubs, Orioles, Rangers, Rockies, Cardinals and Red Sox.

Over his career, he snagged over 260 wins, proving that you don’t need a blazing fastball to get the job done. Moyer was an All-Star once and was also a big part of the Phillies’ World Series win in 2008.

What’s really cool about him is that he pitched in the majors until he was 49, which is just amazing.

Jean Segura

Jean Segura started his MLB career with the Los Angeles Angels in 2012 before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. Segura has also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies and is currently playing with the Miami Marlins.

With a career batting average over .280, Segura has demonstrated consistent hitting throughout his career. His speed has also been a significant factor in his game, having stolen 20 or more bases multiple times in his career.

Segura earned an All-Star selection in 2013 with the Brewers and again in 2018 with the Mariners.

Segura Key Stats

  • All-Star (Brewers, Mariners)
  • 200+ Hit Season (Diamondbacks)
  • 40+ Stolen Base Season (Brewers)

Rare Choices

The following players are generally well-remembered in one of the uniforms but not necessarily both.

Freddy Garcia

Freddy Garcia, nicknamed “The Chief”, was a prominent Major League Baseball pitcher from Venezuela whose career spanned from 1999 to 2013. Garcia had impressive stints with multiple teams, notably with the Seattle Mariners and the Chicago White Sox.

He shined during his time with the Mariners from 1999 to 2004, winning an American League ERA title in 2001. In 2005, Garcia was instrumental in the Chicago White Sox’s World Series championship, throwing seven scoreless innings in Game 4 to help secure the title.

His career concluded with a respectable record of 156 wins and 108 losses, an ERA of 4.15, and 1621 strikeouts.

  • All-Star (Mariners)

Heathcliff Slocumb

You may remember Heathcliff Slocumb as a relief pitcher with the Phillies and Red Sox in the 90s, but he was a bit of a journeyman playing for 8 teams over the course of 10 years. (Cubs, Phillies, Cardinals, Red Sox, Mariners, Padres, Indians (now Guardians), Orioles)

He was a solid reliever with some good seasons and even an all-star appearance while with the Phillies in 1995.

However, he might be best known in baseball lore for being traded from the Red Sox to the Mariners in 1997 for Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek, a deal that later appeared very lopsided in Boston’s favor.

Jason Vargas

Jason Vargas, a left-handed pitcher, enjoyed a lengthy career in the Major Leagues from 2005 to 2019. He played for six different teams but spent the majority of his time with the Seattle Mariners and Kansas City Royals.

Vargas had a career year in 2017 when he led the American League with 18 wins and earned an All-Star selection while with the Royals. His career statistics include a 99-99 win-loss record, a 4.29 ERA, and 1147 strikeouts.
