Baseball Players who Played for the Mariners and Nationals

There is a good chance that if you’ve found this page then you’re playing the Immaculate Grid.

That also means that today’s grid has asked for players who have played for both the Seattle Mariners and Washington Nationals.

And, it also means that you’re probably stuck on this particular box and you’re looking for a little help. Sound about right so far?

Well, good news, you’re in the right place.

I’ve done some research and have found players who played on both the Mariners and Nationals.

Bobby Ayala

Bobby Ayala was a relief pitcher for 8 seasons. He is best known for his time with the Mariners, but he also played for the Reds, Cubs and Montreal Expos (now the Nationals).

Ayala was often used as a closer and/or setup man, accumulating over 60 saves during his career.

However, his time in Seattle was marred by inconsistency and he became a controversial figure among fans. Despite this, he had a couple of strong seasons, particularly in 1994 when he posted a 2.86 ERA. Even with his ups and downs, Ayala was a frequent figure on the mound during the ’90s.

Nelson Cruz

Nelson Cruz is in his 19th season in the major leagues. He has played for 8 different teams over that span including the Rangers, Mariners, Twins, Rays, Padres, Nationals, Orioles and Brewers.

Cruz has had a ton of success throughout his career including 7 All-Star appearances (Rangers, Orioles, Mariners, Twins) and 4 Silver Slugger awards (Mariners, Twins).

He’s gone over 40 home runs twice in his career (Orioles, Mariners) and over 100 RBIs in 4 different seasons (Orioles, Mariners, Twins).

Cruz Key Stats

  • All-Star (Rangers, Orioles, Mariners, Twins)
  • Silver Slugger (Mariners, Twins)
  • 40+ Home Run Season (Orioles, Mariners, Twins)
  • 100+ RBI Season (Orioles, Mariners, Twins)

Sean Doolittle

Sean Doolittle is a pitcher perhaps best known for his time with the Washington Nationals in Major League Baseball from 2017 to 2020, during which he played a key role as a reliever for the team.

He helped the Nationals win their first World Series championship in 2019. However, his career began with the Oakland Athletics, where he spent five seasons as a standout reliever, earning an All-Star nod in 2014.

Doolittle’s ability to generate strikeouts, combined with his low walk rate, made him a valuable asset in high-leverage situations.

Doolittle Key Stats

  • All-Star (Athletics, Nationals)
  • World Series Champion (Nationals)

Denard Span

Denard Span was a center fielder in the Major Leagues from 2008 to 2018. Span played for five teams, starting his career with the Minnesota Twins before moving on to the Nationals, Giants, Rays, and Mariners.

Over his 11-year career, he notched a .281 batting average, accumulated 1498 hits, 265 doubles, 72 triples and 185 stolen bases. One of the highlights of his career was his 2014 season with the Nationals where he led the NL with 184 hits.
